DJ So Wavveyy Talks Career & Advice To Indie Artists - We Are Jersey

DJ SoWavveyy can maneuver in any room you put him. His fanbase originated in Central and South Jersey when he first started and has expanded across the tri-state area since then. We Are Jersey managed to catch up with him during the summer season as he’s traveling along the East Coast and leaving his footprints everywhere he spins.

If you're from the Garden State, there's no doubt you've heard him getting the crowd hype from The Lobby to The Pool in Atlantic City. Let's get to know the ladies' favorite DJ a little bit better.

Where were you born and raised?

I’m a New Jersey native born and raised, Keyport, New Jersey to be exact.

When did you first fall in love with music?

Music has been a love of mine for as long as I can remember. I remember being fascinated with DJ-like toys and turntables as a kid. In a nutshell, I knew my life would revolve around music in some way, shape or form. Growing up, my parents would blast music in the mornings throughout the house while we cleaned. We listened to all types of music varying from all genres and decades. Anything from Michael Jackson to the Jungle Brothers and Chaka Khan. That’s really where my love for different genres of music came from and my knowledge. I can recall so perfectly being 3 or 4 years old with a KC & Jojo CD, bumping it in my room. I’ve always been an old soul so my love for music was destined for sure.

When was the moment you knew you wanted to start DJ’ing?

The funny thing is I never actually wanted to be a DJ or saw myself as a DJ. In college, there was a senior who was the go-to DJ on campus, DJ Dullay, and he was looking for someone to take over as his replacement. I had already made mixes and my roommate, Kasuan, told him I was a DJ which was a lie. Next thing I knew, I was DJing with DJ Dullay. I had no equipment at the time, but the rest was history, people were booking me. Way before that on my 13th birthday, my older cousin gifted me a pair of Technic 1200’s turntables. Ironically they gathered dust for another 5-6 years after that until I saved enough money to get everything else I needed. I’m a huge person on signs, manifestation, and purpose. That gift of the turntables 13 years ago was a sign for me to be a DJ at some point in my life. I believe we all serve a purpose on this earth and one of my purposes is to connect with individuals through music.

Advice to artists and producers on how to properly ask you to listen/spin their track.

WOW THIS QUESTION IS THE ONE! Treat your proposal as a business interview. Any artist or whomever should always approach me in the most professional and prepared manner. You get more respect and DJs are more inclined to answer your questions and help someone who has done their research, is prepared and professional.

Make sure to have some type of Electronic Press Kit (EPK), or links to your work. Always address the DJ directly, have normal conversation, show support to gigs, etc. You don’t want it to just throw your music at us, that won’t work.

Dropping your link in my dm and saying, “I’m the hottest in the city, peep this.” I PROMISE WILL NOT DO A THING!
