Novak Djokovic Defeats Nick Kygrios to Claim Sixth Title at Wimbledon and 21st Grand Slam - We Are Jersey

Every year, every major sports league in the world has some form of championship which players or teams compete for in their pursuit of glory and success. Things like the four American Major League Championships doled out every year that create an abundance of excitement across the country, but there is much more than what the United States has to offer. This past week we saw the Wimbledon Open professional championship take place in London, England, and it went down in interesting fashion. Ultimately however, Novak Djokovic went on to defeat his opponent Nick Kyrgios to earn his sixth title at Wimbledon in typical Novak Djokovic fashion.

Djokovic progressed with ease early on in the tournament before running into a little trouble in the round of 8, going down 2 sets to 0 against Janik Sinner before going on to win three straight and secure a victory. On the opposing side of that half of the bracket. Cameron Norrie took down David Goffin in five sets as well, setting himself up as Djokovic’s opponent in the next round. Rafael Nadal even struggled through this round, admittedly playing through an abdominal tear but going down 2-1 before closing out the match in a tight fight set. Nick Kyrgios put on arguably the best match in the round of 16 when he took down Christian Garin in three quick sets to advance to the round of 8, upon which he would get very lucky.

The stage was set for the round of 8 with Djokovic a heavy favorite over Norrie and many unsure of how Nadal and Kyrgios would go given Nadal’s injury and Kyrgios electric performance, but then shocking news broke. Nadal was pulling out of the tournament, giving Kyrgios a bye to the finals and more time to rest before likely facing Djokovic in the finals. Djokovic confirmed that by beating Norrie 3-1 in their matchup, but looked prepared for Kyrgios regardless and prepared he was. Like Norrie did, Kyrgios managed to snag the first set against Djokovic during their championship matchup but Djokovic shut him down after that, winning three straight sets once again in dominating fashion and securing his sixth official win at the Wimbledon Open. This was also his 21st official Grand Slam title, putting him 1 ahead of Roger Federrer and 1 behind Nadal.
